DEA Jason Walker became a widower at Twenty-eight. Two years later he’s still torturing himself with guilt. They’d married young, and she’d been his first love, but her illness changed everything. They’d fought a losing battle and he’d held her to the very end. Now he just wants to be left alone with his misery and memories.
Mercy James is no stranger to grief and loneliness. Her brother’s death of a drug overdose, and her police officer father’s death in the line of duty were the driving forces behind her pursuit of a career in the DEA. In spite of—or maybe because of—her past, Mercy doesn’t believe in feeling sorry for others, or for herself.
When a case brings Jason and Mercy together, and their attraction heats up, can her tough, straightforwardness help Jason learn to live in the light again? He’d lost his first love, but is he ready for a forever love?
So this was my first time reading Riley Edwards and it didn't take me long to get wrapped up in this story. Told in dual POV, we a get brief look at what happened with Jason's wife at the start of the book, but over the course of the story we learn why he's lived with guilt for the last couple of years. We also get a front row seat to see how Jason's choices have not only affected him, but also his family, and the mending of the rift that's happened.
I have respect for Mercy, hers hasn't been an easy life, and we see how much inner strength she has, to have been able to deal with the losses she's suffered. And she's a pretty kickass DEA agent. But she's also got a serious vulnerable side that she does a good job of hiding.
I was a bit surprised by how quickly the relationship between Mercy and Jason evolved from co-workers to more, but it worked because there was actually more of the story that was dedicated to the issues that came about while navigating the personal side of their lives. I loved that Jason's dad was the voice of reason and clarity when it came to all of the conflicting feelings Jason was experiencing, and even Mercy herself had some sound advice. Now, there comes a point in the story where Jason REALLY messed up, and he even acknowledged overreacting, and I could understand why Mercy wasn't so quick to listen; thankfully her BFF Tuesday gave her something to think about when it came to Jason.
As far as the case that brought Jason and Mercy together, that whole situation was messed up; I do wish we could have learned what had happened to that one teacher after the date she'd gone on, and what caused her personality to change so drastically, but I'm really wondering what's going to happen with Delaney and Carter, can't wait to get their story!
