BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY - Once Perfect (Shattered Past #1) by Cecy Robson

Once Perfect
Shattered Past # 1
By: Cecy Robson
Releasing October 7th, 2014
Loveswept: Flirt

His life was never easy. Hers wasn’t supposed to be this hard. They come from different worlds, but fate lures them together in a way neither expected in Cecy Robson’s raw, steamy series debut—perfect for fans of Monica Murphy and J. Lynn.

Evelyn Preston’s future once looked perfect—until her wealthy father was caught in an embezzlement scandal and took his own life. Alone and struggling to pay her college tuition and bills, Evelyn finds a job as a waitress at the ultra-hip nightclub Excess, where she used to have more in common with the privileged private-school clientele than her fellow staff members. But something attracts her to the sexy six-foot-four bouncer and underground MMA fighter Mateo Tres Santos. Although they’ve led different lives, their troubled pasts bonds them in both survival and love.

Mateo is ex-army who wound up in prison for assaulting the man who harmed his sister. Now he’s feeling the same protective impulse for this petite blond waitress. When Evelyn experiences a panic attack at the club, Mateo comes to her rescue. And when Mateo is wounded shielding her from a brawl, Evelyn returns the favor and comes to his aid.

As their attraction intensifies, Mateo is determined to find out what nightmares are lurking in Evelyn’s past—even if that means tackling his own to save her.

Excerpt
“Malibu Barbie. We need more cocktail napkins!”

I stopped wiping the bar booth, torn between throwing my bucket at Sam or at the cluster of bouncers chuckling at his Barbie dig. I still had two more booths to clean before the doors to the Main Line’s infamous Club Excess opened and the real work began. A crowd of spoiled brats―offspring of Philly’s wealthiest families―with too much money and too much attitude already crowded the doors. I should know. I used to be one of them. Except they still had the money.

I had a screaming boss.

“Malibu!”

“Jesus, Sam, I’m going.” I tossed my towel on the table and stomped across the dance floor in my black, thigh-high boots. If it weren’t for the crazy tips the drunk idiots dropped like bowling balls, no way would I work at a place where I had to accessorize tiny black shorts and a skimpy tank with these hooker boots. The white dress shirt tied at my belly was Sam’s way of compromising when me  and a few of the other waitresses complained about our new “uniforms.” The more desperate among us tied it closer to their cleavage. I didn’t. Even if it meant less money, I wanted to hang on to what little pride I had left.

My steps slowed as I neared the group of bouncers huddled around Mateo. He was young, younger than at least half of them, and still they looked up to him. ’’Considering Mateo was an ex-con who fought in fight clubs, you’d think the staff would avoid him’’.

I sure did.

Hell, I’d barely spoken to him in the six months I’d worked at Excess, using any excuse to keep my distance. That said, there was something about him that made people take notice. His burly arms crossed his chest. Power was inked on one forearm in bold Gothic lettering, Wrath on the other, and black flames crawled up both, disappearing beneath the sleeves of his tight black T-shirt.

My puny shoulders tensed as I drew closer. Mateo had served time for beating some poor guy so brutally the guy had spent two weeks in the hospital recovering from the bashes to his face and body. I watched Mateo, a lot. Every now and then, I’d catch him glancing my way, too. He’d offer me a brief nod or a small smile, but I never offered anything in return.

His size, the depth of his voice, and his aptitude for violence scared me, despite his captivating looks. He moved like a panther staking out his turf, ready for anything, his steely hazel eyes taking everything in.

He spoke low and rough as the last of his crew arrived. “Listen up. Keep the drugs and the dealers out. They come in with that shit, you see anyone selling―send their asses out the door. Sam doesn’t want another OD in his place. If those rich pricks want to die, they can do it somewhere else.”

The others answered Mateo with stiff nods, except for Dale, who whistled as I walked by.

“Nice ass, Evelyn . . .”

His voice trailed off. I turned to shoot him a dirty look over my shoulder only to catch the death glare Mateo was firing his way. “Leave Evie the fuck alone and pay attention, Dale,” Mateo told him. Dale immediately dropped his gaze, allowing Mateo to return his attention to the rest of the group. “With the first week of classes over, these fools are looking to party hard, and the dealers are ready to assist. ““Don’t go it alone. Call for backup if you need it, when you need it. I’ll take point near the bar. Ant’s my second. He’ll take point left of the floor. If I’m mixed up in some other shit, you call him. Got me?”

The bouncers collectively muttered in agreement. Even Dale.

My heart was thumping against my sternum and I lost my footing. I reached for my ponytail and tightened it fast, trying to pretend that was the reason I’d tripped and not, absolutely not, because ’Mateo had stuck up for me and shut Dale up on my behalf. Or because he’d called me “Evie.” Again. No one else had ever called me that.

REVIEW:
Enjoyable story, some parts were predictable, but there with a certain twist I did NOT see coming.

Mateo is definitely hawt, as described by Evelyn's best friend, and I quote "a hot guy with big muscles and an ass capable of snapping chicken necks". That my friends, is quite possibly one of the craziest descriptions I've ever been blessed to read.

Both Evelyn and Matteo have their past issues to deal with, but the difference is that Mateo's issues all have to deal with the abuse he and his sisters suffered (and still continue to suffer from) at the hands of their father. Evelyn's issues aren't presented outright, but from reading you can figure out what happened, but the kicker was when she finally realizes the truth.

Their relationship goes through fits and spurts (as most relationships do), but for the most part everything is going well until Mateo takes Evelyn to a family function. It's at this function when Evelyn is confronted with Mateo's and his sisters' reality when their father shows up. That episode is certainly the catalyst for a break-up, and I can't wait to see how it's dealt with when the next book is released.

REVIEW:
I was lucky enough to receive a copy of this book a few months back when I was asked for my opinion on a particular scene's dialogue, but I got so wrapped up in the story that this has become one of my all-time favorite books. This is one of the more unconventional romance stories I've had the privilege to read.

I found it easy to just fall into the story and empathize with the emotions of both Rey and Grace; I also thought that Ms. Richland did an excellent job with the result of the TBI that Rey was left with. I'm a veteran of the US military and have worked and visited with several members of the military who have been injured over the last 13 years.

I loved watching Rey, who was initially portrayed as a ladies man in First to Burn, as he fell in love with Grace. I think a big part of what helped this story move forward was that Rey accepted the fact that he was injured and knew he wouldn't be returning to duty; the hard part for him to deal with was the speech issue. But even with his limited and stilted speech, he and Grace really did fall in love and the story ends with a great HEA. I would definitely recommend this book if you're looking for a good romance that doesn't begin in the best of circumstances, but love happens in spite of the characters meeting for the first time.

Author Info
Emma Cane grew up reading and soon discovered that she liked to write passionate stories of teenagers in space. Her love of “passionate stories” has never gone away, although today she concentrates on the heartwarming characters of Valentine, her fictional small town in the Colorado Rockies.
Now that her three children are grown, Emma loves spending time crocheting and singing (although not necessarily at the same time), and hiking and snowshoeing alongside her husband Jim and two rambunctious dogs Apollo and Uma.

REVIEW:
Entertaining and quick read, something that doesn't bring you down with any drama or angst to it. I liked the chemistry between Amanda and Mason, I just wish it could have been a bit more believeable that they decided to take a chance and pursue a relationship after knowing each other only 3 days.

REVIEW:
It took me a few pages to get into this book, but after the first 5 or so pages, I was hooked! I loved the deal Mia and Lexi came up with once they got to university, and while Mia was a virgin, she definitely wasn't naive when it came to sex, she just hadn't gone all the way, so that part of the story was somewhat believable. I will say that Gabe is a pretty decent book boyfriend.

REVIEW:So this installment in the series finds both Mia and Lexi dealing with health issues; if you've read the first book then you know what Lexi is dealing with, but I kind of suspected what was going on with Mia. Because there's so much going on, it's hard to forget that with this book, Mia and Gabe have only known each 2 weeks. Still plenty of witty banter with the characters, and I was even impressed that Gabe extended his apology to Lexi after what transpired at the end of book 1.

Forever & an Engine

Blurb
Mia and Gabe’s ingrained personality traits continue to rub each other up the wrong way, while Mia’s formal diagnosis creates even more tension in their relationship.

REVIEW:
This series just keeps getting better! Mia and Gabe are still trying to figure out their relationship, only now it's more complicated due to Mia's health issue. I love how Gabe is there for Mia no matter what, but sometimes his controlling attitude is a bit much to handle. I will say that this book ends on a ginormous cliffhanger.

The Honeymoon Period
The Austin Series # 4
Released May 22nd, 2014

Blurb
While Mia took her operation and diagnosis in her stride, it has taken its toll on Gabe. He desperately wants to convince Mia to change her mind, to one day agree to marry him and start a family, but Mia is still weighted down by the baggage of her past.

Gabe also struggles with his slow recovery from the accident, while Mia finds his increasing mood swings and possessiveness more and more difficult to handle. The friction only adds to their scorching sexual compatibility.

Robert Austin, aware that Gabe wants more, presents Mia with a difficult choice. Deal with her commitment issues, or walk away from his son for good.

Lexi however seems to be making remarkable progress in her personal life, handling not only her miscarriage, but a new relationship with Doug. Is she strong enough to sustain it all?

REVIEW:
The angst and turmoil is still going strong in this installment; Gabe is having a rough time dealing with the aftermath of not only the accident, but Mia's diagnosis and surgery. It also doesn't help when Gabe's father basically gives Mia an ultimatum regarding their relationship. I'm so glad to see that Lexi is still a big part of this series, and her storyline is really well written, I love how well Ms. Fallowfield has done with the character development.

REVIEW:
A big turning point in this series, it's awesome to see how Mia, Gabe and Lexi have all developed into maturing young people and figuring out the dynamics of relationships. There are still plenty of hot, steamy sex scenes, with Gabe still being one of the best book boyfriends.

REVIEW:
And so we have the last book in this surprisingly outstanding series. And just as the previous books, you'll experience a wide range of emotions, from laughter to tears to happiness to frustration and back to happiness again with Mia and Gabe continuing to navigate the sometimes murky waters of their relationship. I'd like to give C.J. Fallowfield a huge round of applause for creating one of my most favorite series I've ever read!

BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY Truth or Dare (Dare to Love #1) by Mira Lyn Kelly

Truth or Dare
Dare to Love # 1
By: Mira Lyn Kelly
Releasing September 16th, 2014
Loveswept

In a deliciously sexy twist on the classic game, USA Today bestselling author Mira Lyn Kelly proves that when playing truth or dare—always choose dare.

After her one attempt at commitment ends with the discovery that her fiancé already has a wife and kid, Maggie Lawson vows that the only people she’ll love ’til death do they part will be her friends. Unfortunately that means Maggie letting her bestie rope her into a year-long dating dare: score a new date each month or pay a penalty. Seems doable—until Maggie’s date stands her up, leaving only one option: the sexy stud who just moved in upstairs. The problem? He and Maggie can’t stop fighting—and that’s just the beginning.

His name is Tyler Daniels and the last thing he needs is his neighbor distracting him with her girl-next-door smile and sharp tongue. Tyler’s in Chicago for one reason: to woo back his selfish ex in order to reclaim the child he once thought was his—and that means keeping Maggie out of his bed. A tall order, since Maggie has become a bigger temptation than he ever expected to face. But before they can even consider leaving the past behind, Maggie and Tyler must accept a brand-new dare: real, forever love.

EXCERPT

“Maggie, you’re killing me,” he said, the air crackling between them.

“I’m sorry. It’s just—” She wet her lip with the pink tip of her tongue and he fisted his hands to keep from reaching for her. He was so focused on not giving in to the compulsion to sweep his thumb across that damp path she’d laid, he almost didn’t hear the rest. “Maybe we’re missing what’s right in front of us. Maybe we’re so hung up on not blowing our friendship and being careful of each other’s feelings and remembering what our priorities are outside of this sizzly thing we have going . . . that we’re ignoring an obvious solution to a mutual problem.”

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying we’re already clear on all the rest of that stuff. Neither of us wants or is available for a relationship. You’re waiting for an opportunity with Gina so you can get your son back, and honestly I think that lack of availability might be the only reason I feel safe enough with you to want this at all. We’re friends, yes. But maybe, this once, we could be more. Get it out of our system and then start fresh.”

He shook his head, mostly because he’d been telling himself “no” for so long he didn’t know how to stop anymore. But even as his head swung in that negating denial, he was asking, “Just once?”

“Just once. Wouldn’t it feel good to let go? Knowing we’re on the same page about tomorrow?”

“Maggie. I don’t want to use you.”

“What if I use you first?” And there was that single arched brow, the teasing smile and challenge mixed with a breathless sort of anticipation he couldn’t ignore. “What if I use you harder?”

“Maggie,” he warned, though the only thing she was going to get if she kept it up was exactly what she was asking for.

“Tyler,” she mimicked sternly. Then, meeting his eyes with the calculating look that had gotten to him all those months in the hallway, she added, “I’d totally use you harder.”

And that was it. He was done.

Because Maggie challenging him with that demon glint in her eye and her whole body exuding a sensual need with his name on it—yeah, she’d hit his button and there was no going back.

“You want hard, Maggie?” he asked, reaching for her as she reached for him, meeting in the middle of a bad idea that suddenly didn’t seem so wrong at all and, holy hell, felt all too right.

“Yes.”

“And you seriously believe we can do this without it screwing up our friendship?”

He might have put a little more faith into the nod she issued if it hadn’t come on the heels of a shuddering breath following the press of his thigh high between her legs. But then maybe he’d gone too far for something so trivial as the truth to matter.

“I wouldn’t have suggested it if I didn’t.”

Christ, she was so pretty, staring at him with those sex-hazed eyes and parted lips.

Palming the firm curve of her ass, he pulled her higher over his thigh, rocking it against her heat. He kissed her, getting lost in the pliant give of her lips and the soft moans escaping them. Fisting the mess of hair at the nape of her neck, he urged her head back so she opened to the hot thrust of his kiss.

Yes.

Maggie knew what she was doing. This was what they wanted. What they needed. The no-strings solution to an itch desperate to be scratched.

It wasn’t a mistake.

“God, Maggie, are you sure about this?”

“I’m sure,” she gasped, her hands sliding up and down the hard contours of his chest. “This is sex. No expectations. Just two people taking advantage of an opportunity they seldom see.”

She was reaching for his mouth with hers when he pushed her back. Searched her eyes.

“I'm pretty sure this is an opportunity available to you any day of the week.”

She shook her head. “You know it’s not.” For too many reasons. She never felt this kind of attraction, this kind of need and draw. And more than that, she never felt the trust.

And maybe the two went hand in hand. Maybe after what happened with Kyle, she couldn’t have the desire without the sense of safety she found with Tyler.

The hand at her ass pulled her in tight against him, so she could feel the hard ridge of his cock unyielding against her belly.

“I want this,” she whispered. “I want you.”

His mouth landed hard over hers, his tongue thrusting between her teeth, filling her with the hot, wet promise of what more there was to come. He kissed her like he couldn’t get enough. Like she was his next breath. Like she was the question, the answer, the everything.

He kissed her like she was kissing him.

And then he was bowing her back, devouring her mouth as his hand slid down her thigh, catching her at the back of her knee and pulling her up against him.

She was tugging at his shirt, her hands everywhere—under it, over it, fisting the fabric at the side of his ribs as she pulled, desperate to get him naked. Desperate for the hot press of his bare skin against her own.

“Tell me what you want,” he growled against her ear.

REVIEW:

This is my first time reading this author's work and I thoroughly enjoyed the story. The sexual tension between Maggie and Tyler was well-written, with the reader being able to follow the progression of their feelings for each other, instead of insta-love. I liked that fact that while Maggie was caustic, she still had a bit of insecurity, and that came through when Tyler stepped in when her monthly date stood her up.

I will say that sometimes the text flow seemed a bit off, I had to go back re-read several passages because they were confusing, it was hard to grasp exactly what the author was trying to convey; also some pop cultural references went over my head and I had to look up a couple of things (like the Ross from "Friends" double fist bump).

I will say that while there is a HEA, this book won't make it easy to get to the HEA; but that's what made it such a fun read. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
