BLOG TOUR & REVIEW - Sweet Love by Mia Kayla

 Title: Sweet Love
Author: Mia Kayla
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Release Date: July 29, 2020
That awkward moment when you insult the boss on your first day on the job. Yeah, that just happened. In my defense, if I’d known it was Connor Colby of the Colby’s Chocolates and Candies empire standing by the display dressed in a candy cane-striped suit, I never would have opened my mouth to tell him that their signature chocolate bar sucked.
How was I supposed to know he was the boss man?
He was in town temporarily to help save his father’s company. I was only there for a payday to jump start my art career.
I had one job—help him come up with a rock solid marketing plan. The task included long nights and late dinners working by Connor’s side. It did not include kisses, sex in the supply closet, or … worst yet, falling in love.
Why is that so bad you ask? Because the man is leaving right after our mission is complete. Job done. Finito.
Will our sweet love turn into sour patched tear jerkers or will he be my big hunk, now & later and forever?

It didn't take long to get wrapped up in this newest release from Mia Kayla, and I enjoyed every part of the story. I liked that Charlie was kind of upfront about why she's employed with Colby Chocolates and Candies (despite not knowing who she was speaking with initially). Connor is back in town for a limited amount of time to help the family business go from being in the red to being profitable again.

To say that both character have parental issues would be an understatement; these are adults so why couldn't they just say how they felt? Yeah it would be an uncomfortable, maybe even a painful discussion, but it needs to be said. The chemistry between them sort of sneaks up; it's there from the beginning, but it's not all blatant and in your face. I enjoyed how they bonded with each other, over late night brainstorming sessions and Chinese food; the fact that he was her support when it came to the destruction of some of her artwork was fantastic.

Mia Kayla is a New Adult/Contemporary Romance writer who lives in Illinois. She is the wife to the husband of the year and mommy to three unbelievable cute little girls who have multiplied her grey hairs.
In her free time she loves reading romance novels, jamming to boy bands, catching up on celebrity gossip and designing flowers for weddings.

Most of the time, she can be caught on the train with her nose in a book sporting a cheeky grin because the main characters finally get their happily-ever-after at the end.

She loves reading about happy endings but has more fun writing them.

RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEW - Loud Mouth (Ice Knights #3) by Avery Flynn

Release Date: June 22

I never meant to say a word, not one single word.

But I did.

Now because of something I leaked—without even realizing it—I've inadvertently broken up one of the Ice Knights’ most legendary bromances. And worse—I've kicked hockey star Ian Petrov's grumpy level to insane levels of grump.

And what could make it worse? How about the two of us being trapped together in a remote cabin after a massive blizzard. Neither of us can leave. Just us, the snow, his resentment, and OMG sexual tension so thick it would take a snowplow to break through it.

I’ve got to get out of here before I do something even dumber than I’ve already done and kiss the sexy with his misplaced anger and perfect pecs. That would be the worst, the absolute worst. But… would it be terrible if we gave in? Just a little? It’s not like we’re ever going to have to spend time together again.

Until the next morning when we’re told we have to play chummy for the press until this news cycle blows over.

F.M.L.

So I didn't realize this is the third book in a series, but it can be read as a standalone. Overall it's a cute story, but it felt rushed at the same time. I really would have liked more information and background on both Ian and Shelby; we can get a rough sense of what life was like for Ian, growing up with his dad (talk about a classic narcissist!) given how his dad acts towards the end of the story when he shows up, but more so Shelby and why she ended up with alcohol abuse problems.

There's a lot of back and forth between Ian and Shelby, I can understand Ian's knee jerk reaction to most situations, given how the shocking secret was leaked, but even right up to the end, Ian still doubted Shelby, so I don't blame her one bit for the choice she made as I most likely would have done the same thing (although that scene with Ian's dad was absolutely hilarious). Wasn't surprising who was the person that got Ian to pull his head out of his posterior, and I thought the epilogue was especially sweet.

RELEASE BLITZ & REVIEW - May Contain Wine (SWAT Generation 2.0 #5) by Lani Lynn Vale

Release Date: May 12

This is for charity. This is for fun. You are a professional. You can do it.

Those are the words that Calloway Alvarez chants to herself as she watches all the large men gather into the small room where she’ll be doing the interviews for her employer—Hero Magazine.

Honestly, she’s convinced herself that she can’t accomplish the task at hand.

That is until she hears his voice, and her head turns to see him standing there.

Louis Spurlock. Greek god. SWAT officer. Keeper of her secrets. Ultimate fantasy. Man who will break her heart.

***

Louis Spurlock has been playing nice.

He’s been biding his time, giving Calloway the space she thinks she needs.

But then he sees her taking photos of his friends in all states of undress, talking to them all as if they’re best friends, and that little thread of control he’d been managing to hold onto unravels.

Let’s change it up, she says. And the moment the words are out of her mouth, he’s stripping to his skivvies, and throwing out a challenge while he’s at it.

Calloway won’t know what hit her when he’s through playing.

But he does know one thing for sure. When it ends, she’ll be his.

I've read several LLV books over the last few years, and I've come to discover that she is one of the few authors (that I've read) that has the ability to bring her characters to life in such a great way. I think she does a great job with her couples that have to start from scratch, but I love when she gives us characters who already have a history and that's exactly what we get with Calloway and Louis. And boy does Louis have some serious groveling to do. One of the things I enjoyed most about this was it was more romance-driven, not a lot of the action-packed suspense of some of her other books. And I have to admit, Louis pulled out plenty, if not all, the stops to get his woman back!

Excerpt

He grabs me by the throat and shoves me into the wall, causing the plasterboard to fall to the floor. Those black eyes penetrate me. His fingers tremble around my neck, and I know it’s because he wants to squeeze harder. It's the first time I truly fear him; I see the man who was born into the world of crime and violence. I know he sees my fear, senses it the same way a predator does his prey. As his lips stretch into a wolfish smirk, he squeezes my neck tighter, cutting off my airways, showing me he has the power to end me right here in this shithole of a flat, the same place he sat and played video games with me. He’s telling me none of that matters, that I’m nothing to him.

Malachi turns so fast, releasing my neck. I gasp, trying so hard to pull in the oxygen my lungs burn for that I don’t have time to process what's happening. That's when I see the smooth metal of the gun he had hidden pushed hard against my dad’s temple. So hard that a trickle of blood falls like a crimson tear.

“What are you doing?” I whisper, too terrified to even breathe or make the wrong move.

My heart stutters as he releases the safety catch, finger steady on the trigger.

“His payment will be paid!” With the gun to my father’s temple, he’s clearly telling me that if I don’t agree to his demands, he’s killing my father. He’s going to make me watch as he blows his brains across the tiny flat. Malachi knows what he is doing. He’s pulling the strings, and now he’s going to watch me dance.

His decision is unwavering. There is no remorse in his eyes as his finger draws back, hand completely steady.

He is a monster.

Shutting my eyes against the pain, a tear escapes. I’m mourning the man I used to know, my freedom, and the girl I know will be changed forever with my answer.

“Take me.”
