From rescue to romance…
Teach a wounded submissive the value of his service. The task ought to be an easy one for an experienced dominant like Henry Webb.
But novice Jay Kress challenges his teacher like no other. Still bearing the bruises of an encounter outside the bounds of safe consensual play, Jay is desperate to submit to the man who saved him—and shamed by his desires.
Henry recognizes the dangers of a relationship built on hero worship. He’ll teach Jay how to stay safe, that’s all. He won’t take advantage of the younger man’s trust. He won’t share his fantasies about his dark-haired, athletic student. He’ll never claim this submissive for his own...
This was my first time reading Ms. Barber's work and although this is the fourth book in the series, I'm actually glad I started with this story because I loved seeing the evolution of Henry's and Jay's relationship.
Jay is a natural submissive who doesn't know the one of the most important rules within the BDSM lifestyle "Safe, Sane and Consensual". Because of his lack of knowledge, he has been abused by a club sadist. Henry has been persuaded by longtime friend and club founder Victor to instruct Jay on what being a submissive truly means and how to protect himself. Henry soon learns that in addition to Jay not knowing the boundaries of the lifestyle, but that he also feels shamed because of his preferences, thereby allowing others to take advantage of him.
I loved watching how Henry took the time to explain certain lifestyle elements to Jay and the weekly homework assignments he would have Jay do in preparation for each visit, and the outcome that would happen when Henry inadvertantly forgot to provide an assignment and swap out the sheets. Despite constantly reminding himself not to get attached to Jay, Henry comes to the realization that he truly wants to be with Jay. They balance each other wonderfully, with Jay bringing youthful exuberance and Henry being the calm, cool, collected one. I truly enjoyed this story and I'm looking forward to reading the earlier books in this series.
