Kara

This book alternates between the summer Declan and Kara met six years prior and the present. While I found this to be an entertaining start to this series, I have to be honest and say that I find Declan to be a first class assnugget in regard to his feelings about Kara in the present time frame. I understand that one has to be ruthless in order to be successful in the cutthroat world of business, but his attitude towards Kara in the current time frame leaves me feeling like I need to spork him in the taint.
I have no issues with Kara, either when she was a senior in high school (when she first met Declan), or now. We've all done ridiculous things in an attempt to get the object of our crush to notice us, so who can fault her for doing some of the things she did back then? And the young woman she became is still true to herself (for the most part). Her primary focus is to save her father's ranch, not try to be someone she's not, although I did get a kick out the part of the story when she decided to go all glamazon for the dinner meeting with Declan.
Declan had a craptastic childhood that has left him jaded yet cyncial. There's no doubt that he had a good idea back when he was just a ranch hand, so good for him that he was able to make that a successful business venture. But his attitude toward Kara when she went to his office irritated me like you wouldn't believe. Without giving away too much of that part of the story, I will say that proposition he presented Kara with would have had him being sued quicker than he would change his socks. I got the feeling from reading his POV that he wanted some type of retribution against Kara by showing her that he is now in the power position. Which I could understand if it was all about some type of revenge against her, but she was clearly into him six years ago, so why the douchenozzle act now?
No sexuals happened in this installment, although the scene at the restaurant was seven kinds of hot, enough that I can't wait to read the next part to see what happens between these two.
