I liked this story enough, but it just didn't "wow" me. I like the friends-to-lovers aspect, but both Alec and Valerie didn't come across as best friends, even from the start of the book. I could see how it would be awkward for them though, since they're seeing each other not so much as friends but as something...more. The whole story takes place during the weekend of their 10 year high school reunion, and what starts out as nothing more than a one-time game of put the pickle in the jar morphs into...something more. Wishes and desires aren't communicated properly, and along the way things are said that can never be taken back, causing a rift between Alec and Valerie.
I really wanted to like this book more than I actually do, I think because with both of their pasts, it's hard to make this into a light-hearted friends-to-lovers story. And the fact that because everything happens over a weekend, it made the story feel somewhat rushed. So while I wasn't exactly "wowed" with this story, I do like it enough that I'll check out the next book in the series whenever it becomes available.
