While I haven't read the first book in the series, I didn't feel lost jumping into this book (although I did purchase the first book). I enjoyed getting to know the characters in this book, Lila's and Cade's relationship seems to be doing fine, as they both get used to the relationship. Cade is great with Lila's kids and they seem to like him just as much. The mystery portion of the story isn't convoluted, but just suspenseful enough to keep you interested in the story. I'm already looking forward to the next book in the series.
