SYNOPSIS

For eight years, I’ve lived with the scars left by him.

William Devereux consumed me until I didn’t know where I ended and he began ... I tried to forget but I was forever changed.

And now he’s back.

Gone is the aggressive hothead who hurt me and set my body on fire in equal measure, replaced with a responsible, doting, single father.

I’m trying my best to remain unaffected.

He’s trying his best to make amends.

Sometimes the one thing you shouldn’t want, is the one thing you can’t breathe without.

This was my first time reading Hayley Oakes and I quite enjoyed this story. Nothing like a good friends-to-enemies-to something to make for good reading, and goodness knows, we definitely get that with Jessa and Will. I like how the story was broken up into the present and the past, although I do wish we could have gotten to see a point from the past where Will and Jessa were actually friends, before Will become vitriolic towards Jessa, as well as when his behavior towards her started changing. There were still plenty of chemistry between Will and Jessa presently, although it's obvious she's trying to not fall down that particular rabbit hole again, Will does what he can to show her he's matured over the last 8 years. While I can certainly understand the grief that Jessa experienced, her lashing out at Will wasn't exactly cool, it certainly wasn't his fault. But again, sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment, doesn't make it right, but there you have it.

I felt like the ending was a bit rushed, but it was still a good look into how Will and Jessa's relationship evolved over the years. One thing I did notice is that certain phrases were used in this story that were definitely British, although the story takes place between Wisconsin and Illinois.
