Do your past mistakes define you forever?

Cruz Zaffino leaves prison after a serving a decade for a crime he didn’t commit. With his life all over the internet, there’s nowhere he can go to avoid his illicit past. Involved with one of Chicago’s toughest gangs, he made enemies bent on ruining everything he has. Nowhere is beyond their reach.

Every day, Rosie Marlow lives with the scars from the worst mistake of her life. It’s the one secret she has in her tiny, gossip-fueled town. When Cruz walks into her bar, covered in tattoos and dangerous attitude, she’s captivated. His rough sexuality makes her melt, and his harsh experience calls to her own broken soul. But her story is private and buried so deep, she’s never had the strength to share it.

She’s the unexpected light to his darkness, yet he knows she’s hiding something. Sultry summer nights in each other’s arms weaken her resistance and taunt her with the idea of forever. But as his adversaries draw close, can she love him enough to let him go?

So this was my first foray into the works of Sharon Kay and I was hooked from the start. I adored both Rosie and Cruz, separately and together. Rosie might be the small town country girl, but she doesn't let that define her and she's smart enough to not be so narrow-minded when it comes to others. At the young of 26, she's already been through two traumatic events in her life, but she doesn't let those events keep her from living her life, even if one of those events has irrevocably changed her forever.

Cruz is fresh out of prison and has decided to settle in small town Sundown, Illinois (I thought it was hilarious how he actually ended up in Sundown). Cruz grew up on the streets of Chicago, but he's far from being a hardened criminal, despite being in prison for a decade. But when he's with Rosie? He's so freakin' sweet it's almost swoon-worthy! One thing I appreciated was that he told Rosie about his life prior to Sundown relatively early in the story, so we didn't have to wonder about some big secret that's long and drawn out throughout the book. Although there is Rosie's secret and that one isn't revealed until a bit later in the book.

The sexy times between Cruz and Rosie are really hot, and introduced into the story at the right time; I like that they got to be friends before anything happened. But when it did happen? All kinds of hot! But I really loved seeing how much Cruz cares for Rosie and how protective he is over her. There's a bit of suspense towards the end of the book, but that is resolved fairly quickly, although we'll never know the reason behind Cruz's release from prison. Overall, I enjoyed this book from start to finish and I'm looking forward to Shane's story next.
