Title: The Secret
Author: Christie Ridgway
Genre: Contemporary Romance
About The Secret:
Being butler to a widower and single father is a dream job in more ways than one for Charlotte “Charlie” Emerson. She helps keep businessman Ethan Archer’s household running without a hitch and enjoys every minute she has with his six-year-old son, Wells. But as time passes, the situation feels alarmingly intimate and when her heart starts beating faster each time Ethan steps through the door, Charlie must exert rigid control over her feelings.
With her secret, falling in love would be all kinds of bad…
Ethan Archer values the woman who keeps his life in order and cares so much for his motherless boy. He and Charlie act in harmony with each other and it’s not hard to picture them as a little family…in fact, it’s so easy, one reckless night he proposes a marriage of convenience.
What will he do if Charlie says yes? And worse, what if she tells him no?
This was my first time reading Christie Ridgway and while I liked the story, but I had a hard time connecting with Charlie's character. I get that she had to maintain that polite, reserved demeanor due to her unique career choice, but to me she came across as so reserved that she barely had a personality. There were a few spots in the story where Charlie's feistiness made an appearance but for the most part she was levelheaded and had the ability to keep calm in a stressful situation. I embraced Ethan from the start of the book, simply because he knew how to let loose and have a bit of fun. Sure he's still grieving his late wife, but he realizes that it's time to move on with his life.
The secret was alluded to a couple of times in the story before you find out what the secret is, and all I can say is that I did NOT see that being the secret! Well played Ms. Ridgway, I believe I depleted the earth of a good amount of oxygen I gasped so much lol. Ethan's reaction to learning the secret was understandable, but I was confused as to why he still wanted to go through with their plan, simply because how would that have contributed to a stable and loving environment for Wells if Ethan still had that anger toward Charlie? I will say that by the epilogue we get to see a Charlie that's no so buttoned up and reserved, but I do wish we'd gotten to see more of that side to her in the book.
