American lass seeks brawny Scot...

As if being newly single isn’t brutal enough, Sloane Chatfield's friends are getting obnoxious about setting her up. When Sloane insists she's waiting for a certain sexy fictional Highlander to come along, her friends surprise her with a trip to Scotland to find her a new boyfriend. She’d rather have a root canal. But if she can find a Highland hunk to “break her heart” before her friends arrive…

In a remote Highland village, Galen Buchanan is struggling to keep the family pub afloat. Everything is falling apart, he’s running out of money, and now there's an opinionated American lass parked at his best table, driving him mad. But then Sloane asks Galen to be her pretend Highland boyfriend...and offers him enough money to save the pub. It’s only for a few days, he figures. What's the worst that could happen?

I found this to be an average romance story, with characters that didn't really do anything to make me want to learn more about them. I thought Sloane's friends were on the pushy side. I didn't understand why it was so imperative that Sloane find a new man so quickly after her failed relationship. These are supposed to be adults, so why couldn't Sloane just stand up to her friends, instead of the elaborate charade? Although I guess if she stood up for herself, there would be no point for her to visit Scotland.

I'm probably in the minority, but I could have done without the couple of dozen mentions of Jamie Fraser; I've never watched Outlander, so I had zero clue as to who that is. The male "hero" Galen, is definitely a sexist piece of work, who felt it rather necessary to keep talking about Sloane paying him for sex. But there was just something about his character that kept me reading the book. If he had been written any other way, this could have been a DNF for me. I think it worked for me because he balanced out Sloane's character, who had moments of insight and clarity, but for whatever reason came across clueless most times.

I would have preferred the extra drama that happened be caused by both Sloane and Maread competing for Galen's attention, rather than Sloane's ex-fiance. That might have made the story a bit more exciting to read. There is a HEA, but it was predictable.
